Susanne Angarano, Principal and Senior Interior Designer presented “Starting out Right: Stakeholder Engagement for Project Success and Regeneration” on Friday, November 15 at the 2019 State of New York Sustainability Conference in Rochester, New York with Pamela Mischen, Faculty Advisor to the President and Associate Professor, Department of Public Administration at Binghamton University.

Using a regenerative development framework, attendees learned how community engagement facilitation coupled with a natural systems approach can foster abundance, and create a strong awareness and connection to the natural environment. They first explored the key concepts of biophilia as the method to design for and cultivate a deep relationship between humans and nature within the built environment. The key concepts of regenerative development were described and investigated, looking at specific natural systems, such as the lithosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere, as well as the concepts to realign humans and community within these systems. A framework was presented which guides a process prior to the start of design in order to work true to these key concepts, and explored how this regenerative framework was deployed for The Living Building at Nuthatch Hollow at Binghamton University.

They also discussed how to bring the concepts into your own work through facilitated discussion and activities so that participants can learn to:

  • Identify the relevant natural and human systems and their interactions

  • Facilitate discussion with and between stakeholders to determine functional requirements in a forum that allows for various opinions and viewpoints to be shared

  • Develop a process plan to implement regenerative pre-design process projects

  • Identify regenerative development opportunities in the process, project, and produced design.

The New York Coalition for Sustainability in Higher Education (NYCSHE), the Conference Steering Committee hosted the ninth annual State of NY Sustainability Conference. The conference was held November 13 - 15, 2019 and brought together faculty, staff, and students from private and public higher education institutions from across New York State.
