Evans And Van Roo Present at The 2025 New York State Green Building Conference
On March 27, 2025, Associate Principals Jason Evans and Andrew Van Roo will be presenting at the 2025 New York State Green Building Conference in Syracuse, NY (Marriott Syracuse Downtown). As a long-time sponsor of the NYS Green Building Conference, Ashley McGraw Architects continues our support in 2025 through the Student Poster Competition.
Creating Harmony: Overcoming Challenges in Passive House Multifamily Design
At 10:30 a.m., Andrew Van Roo, Associate Principal, will be co-presenting “Creating Harmony: Overcoming Challenges in Passive House Multifamily Design” with Nicole Schuster of Positive Trace Architecture.
The presentation explores team collaboration and the challenges that arise when creating a Passive House Building by looking through the lens of the Cold Spring Apartments project. The 56-unit apartment complex located in Tannersville, NY includes a mix of senior and affordable housing as well as fitness centers, community rooms, offices, and storage units. The project recently received the PHIUS CORE 2021 design certification and is set to receive the full certification following the completion of construction.
Van Roo and Schuster will discuss how the team with many members who are new to Passive House projects are tackling challenges related to ground source heat pumps (GSHP), custom climate data, and peak load balancing. The presentation will also share details on how to incorporate Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERV) most effectively while using GSHPs, addressing thermal bridging, Passive House Institute (PHIUS) requirements, and best practices.

Reactivating a Historic Industrial Site: Challenges and Opportunities on the Way to Net Zero Energy
At 2:00 p.m., Jason Evans, Associate Principal, will be co-presenting with Taitem Engineering on “Reactivating a Historic Industrial Site: Challenges and Opportunities on the Way to Net Zero Energy”. The center point of the presentation is the Syracuse Bread Factory. The project is a reactivation of a unique historic building into a carbon-neutral neighborhood anchor.
The Bread Factory is participating in NYSERDA’s Building of Excellence Early Design Support program. This project is a complete remediation and redevelopment of a historically significant and long-vacant building. By exploring and sharing lessons learned during pre-design and design, the presenters hope to push the market forward while exploring the potential for a lower-carbon future inherent in reusing our beautiful older buildings. As a listed building with historic architectural value, the team faced and overcame challenges relating to maintaining its historic façade and other architectural features while creating an attractive mixed-use building that aims for net-zero or near-net–zero performance.
Join Jason in the Conesus room to learn more about this net zero reactivation!
