Caryl E. Adams Elementary Pool RENOVATION. WHITNEY POINT Central School District

As part of a $27.7 million capital project approved by Whitney Point Central School District residents in May 2021, a major highlight was the renovations of the existing pool and locker rooms at Caryl E. Adams Elementary School.

This facility replaces the former five-lane swimming pool originally constructed in 1965 with a completely reimagined, competition-ready aquatic environment. A small addition was required, as the pool’s footprint was rotated 90 degrees and deepened to accommodate six swimming lanes, competitive diving and expanded locker room capacity. Extensive building science research and analysis was conducted to evaluate both the new and existing exterior wall construction requirements. Daylighting and thermal studies were performed to assess a multitude of glazing options and resulted in both an optimized thermal performance and exceptional daytime illumination levels. Special care was taken to reduce direct sunlight on the pool surface by implementing a high-performance light diffusing insulated glazing unit in all curtain walls.

The new pool features a complex sloping deck, new scoring platform, expanded spectator bleachers, and modernized locker rooms. Specialty items include district branded starting blocks, lane lines, scoreboard and records board, upgraded Daktronics timing systems, an array of state-of-the-art Paddock pool equipment, high efficiency dehumification and the inclusion of an “evacuator” system to minimize levels of airborne chloramines resulting in  enhanced overall comfort and better indoor air quality.

Serving as a true community hub, the school district envisioned the aquatics center not only as a student asset but also as a valuable year-round resource for the wider community. In addition to supporting physical education and athletics, the upgraded facility will enrich the district’s popular enrichment programs, where swimming remains a favorite activity among Whitney Point residents.
